BRANLYN NEIGHBOURHOOD YOUTH ASSOCIATION (BNYA)

The Branlyn Neighbourhood Youth Association (BNYA) is a group of youth ages 8-17 formed in Brantford.

The BNYA is known mostly for its environmental work in the city. 2011, brings the BNYA its 4th year in running Earth Hour, and they will continue to do yearly cleanups around the city.

The BNYA also participates in many fundraisers, such as BBQs, riding the Big Bike, and helping in BNA charity sport tournaments.  You can also find them volunteering in city events such as Fun Day.  They also adopt families at Christmas time through Light a Smile.

This year, the BNYA hopes to expand their efforts into creating new events for the city.

EARTH HOUR

Earth hour started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 in order to raise awareness on climate change.  In 2008, Earth Hour went global with over 50 million people turning off their lights across 35 countries, including Canada.  It became the largest climate awareness campaign in the history of our world.

The movement continued growing in 2009 with over 4000 cities in 88 countries participating.  In that year, Brantford stood out with a 10.7 percent energy reduction.  In 2010, Earth Hour furthermore expanded with 128 countries reducing energy.  That makes 66 percent, or two thirds of the world participated in Earth Hour.  Brantford once again contributed to this global initiative.  This year, we aim to challenge ourselves to reduce more energy.

On March 26th, from 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., we encourage you to participate in Earth Hour by not ONLY turning out your lights, but also to unplug any unused electronic devices such as televisions, computers, stereos, etc.  This will reduce the use on phantom power, which is the power that is used when items are plugged in, even when not being used.  We also invite you to join us at Harmony Square from 8:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. on March 26th to come together with our families and friends and participate in our Earth Hour.
